Assessment of Climate and Catchment Control on Drought Propagation in the Tekeze River Basin, Ethiopia

It is crucial to understand the development of hydrological drought which unique a sub-basin derive management strategies that can address cause. In this study, relationships between climate and catchment control against in Tekeze River Basin (TRB), Ethiopia, were assessed. The Water Evaluation Planning (WEAP) modeling tool was selected mimic behavior historical characteristics basin modeled for period 1981 2018. most severe events years analyzed on monthly basis, where classical rainfall deficit identified be common typology within basin. Once modeled, both meteorological analyses performed using Threshold Level Method (TLM) 168 months with magnitudes as high 110 mm/month 60 streamflow anomalies up 17 observed. While temporal resolution impacts results pertaining development, analysis showed fast responding, storage did not play significant role delaying onset. Compared naturalized streamflow, construction Dam main river indicative an over 900% increase dry season flows but reduction 23% wet flows, showing potential redistribute runoff space time.
